April 2, 2020: eResources Update, National Library Week 2020 Going Online

Our online eResources page just got a major update! A lot of categories (and corresponding links) have been added, including Art and Creativity, Virtual Tours, Teens, Music, Health, Multicultural educational resources, and much more. It may take a little digging, but you are sure to find something that you need or would enjoy on this list. With the recent “shelter-in-place” order taking effect very soon, digital resources are going to be more important than ever for our educational and entertainment needs. Check it out here: mmrls.lib.ms.us/eresources

MMRLS staff members are currently preparing to move our National Library Week (April 19-25) schedule of programs online for 2020! This online program will be a first of it’s kind for our library system. Please keep an eye on this page and our social media sites for more information.

Hope you are all staying home and staying safe! As always, please contact me at: director@mmrls.lib.ms.us for assistance or questions. It has been a pleasure speaking to so many of you recently.

Best Regards – Josh Haidet, Executive Director

March 27, 2020: Storytimes and eResources

MMRLS is continuing to offer great virtual storytimes for kids! Visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/midmisslib/ to see our most recent story, “The Wonky Donkey” read by Amy Bowling. Our thanks again to HarperCollins publishers for allowing us to provide these great online stories to you.

Remember to check our eResource page at mmrls.lib.ms.us/eresources for regular updated links to educational, informational, and entertaining content. Links have now been sorted into categories to make it easier to find what you need. Recent updates include National Geographic for Kids, and alot of great math resources for those of you tackling homeschooling of your children. Remember, if you have need of a resource covering a certain topic, we are here to help! Also, if you have found a great resource you’d like us to share, please send it to us.

Speaking of eResources, our Digital Library Card option has been very popular since its inception last week! Please continue to take advantage of this service by clicking the “Digital Library Card” icon to the left. You can also use this option if you have forgotten your PIN number. We’ll be happy to reset it for you. And don’t worry about fines, overdues, or anything else right now. If you have a card, you can access our resources.

Finally, I am sorry to report that we currently have no firm date as to when we will be able to resume our normal hours of operations. Our staff is working hard to safely and responsibly provide the best possible library services to you at this difficult time. Email us at: director@mmrls.lib.ms.us with any questions or requests.

Please stay safe during this time: stay home if you are able!

Best Regards – Josh Haidet, Executive Director

March 20, 2020: Online Storytime, and More eResources!

We know that you are all missing our great children’s programming, so we have posted our first online storytime! Thanks to the generosity of publishers like Harper Collins and Scholastic, we will be posting stories a few times a week to our Facebook page, located at https://www.facebook.com/midmisslib.

We are also doing all we can to provide you with additional eResources. To that end, we have increased the number of downloads on Hoopla permitted to MMRLS patrons from 5 to 8! This will allow you to download more of the eBooks, eAudiobooks, Movies, TV, Music, and Comics you love. This change will be in effect until July 31st. Visit our website to get started today!

There have also been several updates to our eResource page located at https://mmrls.lib.ms.us/eresources where we are posting useful and free resources as we become aware of them. Here are some highlights from today’s updates:

Thanks again, and remember to contact us using the information above with any questions you might have. Stay safe everyone!

Best Regards – Josh Haidet, Executive Director

March 18, 2020: eResource Page, TumbleBooks, and Library Services Updates:

We are hoping it might be easier on all of you for us to collect links to all of the great eResources we have to offer on one page. We’ll also be adding other useful links to this page as we find them.

Check out: https://mmrls.lib.ms.us/eresources

We like to welcome TumbleBooks to our eResource offerings! TumbleBooks’ databases are easy to use, and feature unlimited access from home. Read as many books as you want, when you want, and on any device. There are no check-outs, holds, or downloads, and books are available instantly. TumbleBooks, has made its collection of online libraries available for free to all public libraries until at least August 31. We certainly thank them for their generosity during this time. You’ll need to visit our eResource page to check them out: https://mmrls.lib.ms.us/eresources

Next we’d like to provide an update on library services to you. Unfortunately at this time we cannot provide an estimate as to the length of our closing. Let me assure you that the decision to close was an extremely difficult one for all of our staff. We know how important library services are to you because we see you everyday taking advantage of them. It is as strange for us to not be at work doing the jobs we love as it is for you to not be able to come to the library. However, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves has issued an executive order telling state agencies to determine which state workers are “essential” and send everyone else home. We are following that directive as best as we can.

In the meantime, if you need assistance with any of our eResources, or if you have general questions, please contact us via email at: director@mmrls.lib.ms.us. Alternatively, you can give us a call at 662-289-5151. We’ll do our best to assist you with your needs. It is after all, our job. Please keep these things in mind during our closure:

  • All items that have a due date of March 9th and after are now due on May 4th. This date will be extended if necessary
  • You will not incur any late fees or fines during our closure
  • Please do not attempt to return checked out items. Our book drops have been sealed. You may keep all checked out items until we reopen
  • All the usual blocks on our eBook services (Axis360, Hoopla) for owing late fines or having overdue materials have been removed. If you have an MMRLS library card, you can use them right now. If you need help with your PIN, please contact us using the information above
  • We have a wide variety of eResources including eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines, Online TV and Movies, learning and teaching resources and much more available to you at:
  • Each and every MMRLS branch library location has WiFi available to the general public.

Finally, the library has gathered a list of trusted sources to provide factual information on the virus and to outline steps to protect yourself. Remember that websites like Facebook, Youtube, etc. are NOT reliable sources of information. Bookmark these sites and return to them regularly for information you can trust:
